Rotherham All But Safe
06/04/2008
Sunday April 6th
FA TESCO PREMIER LEAGUE
NORTHERN DIVISION
Rotherham United 3-3 Preston North End Rotherham all but secured a second season in the Premier League and would have made absolutely sure but for an injury-time Preston equaliser. Two up at half-time through Suzanne Davies and a Sarah Jones' own-goal, the hosts extended their lead with a Helen Lynskey goal on 54 minutes. Preston replied through Gemma Watson on 65 minutes, Hannah Bailey five minutes later and despite a few scares, Rotherham looked to be holding on for a narrow victory. However, with the game two minutes into stoppage time, Alison Taberner levelled with a free-kick from quite some distance, that meant both sides featured in a draw for the first time season.
Aston Villa and Stockport remain in danger of the drop, the latter having to beat Newcastle in their last game to have any hope of staying up.
Sunderland A-A Lincoln City Sunderland's game with promotion chasing Lincoln was abandoned at half-time due to snow, leaving the Imps most frustrated, having been 1-0 up.
The game began in blizzard conditions (pictured) and as the half progressed, the snow fell heavier and conditions deteriorated.
On 26 minutes, Jodie Snelson cut inside and unleashed a shot from 25 yards which dipped just under the bar. Sunderland keeper Helen Alderson later tipped over a Snelson volley at full stretch. The home side were unlucky not to level as Sarah Danby, Natalie Gutteridge and Lucy Bronze went close.
Lincoln Chairman Geoff Adams said: "It was snowing very heavily with no sign of the weather letting up, to the point where no lines were visible on the pitch, and the ball was continually collecting snow as it rolled along the ground."
The match has now been re-scheduled for April 20th.
Tranmere Rovers 3-3 Newcastle United Newcastle came from three down to share the points at Tranmere. Rovers took a 6th minute lead through Helen King, which Rachel Rigby added to on 25 & 60 minutes, the latter when a backpass was intercepted. Just five minutes later, the fightback began, as Rachel Furness reduced the deficit from the edge of the box. Six minutes further on and a Kelly Ridley goal direct from a free-kick set up a tense finish, with Ruth Sutcliffe scrambling the ball home to level five minutes from time.
