Kingsthorpe Treble Tames Trinity
04/03/2008
Lowly Northants County League side, Kingsthorpe Ladies, turned the form book upside down to inflicted a 3-2 defeat on AFC Trinity in the League Cup semi-final.
A spirited, battling and gutsy performance saw Kingsthorpe haul themselves back from being two goals behind with three second-half goals from Rebecca Williams, Danielle Charlton and Amy Milligan, to book their place in the final against league champions, Daventry Town Ladies.
On a blustery afternoon, Trinity broke the deadlock with a 35-yard effort from Laura Poingdestre and Bryna Holmes doubled the visitors advantage with a side-foot volley, after latching onto Hayley Mitchell's inch-perfect cross.
With the visitors seemingly cruising towards the final, Kingsthorpe turned on the style to turn the game on its head and hit back as Rebecca Williams started their recovery.
Danielle Charlton levelled the tie on 70 minutes with Amy Milligan netting the decisive winner just sixty seconds later to send the underdogs through.
Having already beaten Kingsthorpe in their two Northants League meetings this season, Trinity Ladies will have been very disappointed to crash out of a second cup competition at the semi-final stage, having been beaten by Northampton Town at the penultimate stage of the County Cup just a few weeks ago.
With League Cup finalist Daventry Town having already secured the Division One title, AFC Trinity will be hoping to turn games in hand into points and in doing so will have a good chance of securing the runners-up spot in Division 2.
Newcomers Abington Athletic have secured the second division title, having won all eight league outings so far this season, in a league that houses just six developing teams.
Playing on Northampton Racecourse, they had a head start on many newly-formed teams, not least because they are partly made up of ex-reserves of Northampton Town and Rushden & Diamonds. With two league games remaining, they will be looking to preserve their unbeaten run and claim maximum points from a season that has yielded upwards of 70 goals, while only conceding goals.
